"So if you see me walkin’ all alone,
Don’t look back, I’m just on my way back home."
Don’t look back, I’m just on my way back home."
The mottled cattledog was spending the afternoon resting in the skeleton of an old truck, escaping the summer's heat and pondering his thoughts. Rooster had seen quite a bit these past few days, things that were beginning to turn in his mind and causing his sleep to become disturbed with vivid dreams he couldn't quite explain when he finally woke. There was something bothering the red and white dog deeply, something that he hadn't spoken about to any living being.
The junkyard was mostly silent while metal and rubber were busy heating up underneath the sun's glare. It gave off a rather unpleasant and very industrial smell. It was an excellent place for him to consider these thoughts, the silence and solitude not deafening, but comforting. He drew in a deep breath despite the hot aroma of oil and rust and released a heavy sigh that seemed to carry across the dusty earth of the abandoned lot. He shifted slightly, laying down to rest his elbows on the torn leather of the truck's seat and cocking his ears to listen to the far-off wailing of cicadas.
He was busy brooding over the last week, turning all the events he had been a part of over in his mind. He had met that reckless, lawless fool on the prairie. Narrowly died stopping a bison stampede. He had tussled with a coyote and helped Dharma, taking her under his wing a little until she was able to get some meat on her bones and walk without needing assistance. It was insane, the number of negative things he had witnessed. Dharma was precious to him now, but he had found her nearly starved and all alone, despite the fact she was blind. That cocky moron was harassing bison and following nobody's advice (especially Rooster's). It seemed like his first week in Graycott that every day was going to be punctuated by some new horror, things that Rooster felt moved to act upon.
These were the things that he thought, his golden-brown eyes scanning the junkyard and his ears listening to the roar of insects. He looked peaceful, almost like nothing in the world was wrong with him, as he lay comfortably in the rusted-out shell of an old farming truck while thoughts uncomfortably jumped around in his mind.
